SAUCONY IN THE 90S

Back in 1991, the US economy was in recession and good design jobs were scarce. I was hired as the only member of the “Advanced Concepts” department – which I found amusing – to focus on integrating new materials and technology into Saucony’s running shoes. To get to our development office in Asia, we flew long-haul from Boston to Chicago to LA, then onto Japan and finally Taiwan, where I stayed for 30 or 40 days at a stretch. We didn’t have internet back then, so I’d roll in and wait for a ream of faxes to arrive. At the end of the day, we’d fax back all our sketches and diagrams. We did all the drafting by hand and used markers to create colourways. I never used a computer!’
