[Content Introduction]
Born in 1925, the year before the Showa era began, and passing away in 1986, Kunio Makino was truly "a painter who lived through the Showa era." In 1943, he entered the Oil Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), receiving guidance from Uzaburo Ihara and Sotaro Yasui. However, he was drafted in May 1945 and returned to school the following year. After graduating in 1948, he held solo exhibitions to showcase his work without belonging to any specific painting group. Makino's works, which remained largely independent of the established art world throughout his life, were rarely collected by museums, and were often purchased and treasured by dedicated private collectors at each exhibition. Makino, who admired Rembrandt since his youth, continued to explore his creative process, pursuing classical realistic techniques. This exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of Makino's birth, 12 years after the second retrospective exhibition held in 2013. Focusing on works treasured by collectors, the exhibition reflects on Makino's artistic career that spanned the Showa era, while also questioning the significance of his work in the Reiwa era. Kunio Makino, who paid no attention to modernism, remained, in a sense, stubbornly dedicated to his painting throughout his life. His painter's soul is summoned, and the Showa painter is revived in this Reiwa era.
