History and Class Consciousness (Geschichte und Klassenbewußtsein), published in 1923, is a collection of essays by the Hungarian Marxist philosopher György Lukács and is considered a foundational text of Western Marxism. Moving beyond the economic determinism of earlier Marxist thought, the book re-emphasizes the Hegelian influences on Karl Marx, highlighting the relationship between human subjectivity, history, and the development of class consciousness. Core concepts and arguments Totality and the dialectical method: Lukács argues that the true essence of Marxist methodology lies not in economic motivation but in the concept of "totality"—the idea that individual facts of social life must be understood as part of an interconnected, historical process. This perspective requires a dialectical approach, which sees the world as constantly changing and created by human activity, in contrast to the rigid, static view of bourgeois thought. Reification and commodity fetishism: Building on Marx's theory of commodity fetishism, Lukács expands the concept of reification, or "thingification," to describe how capitalist society transforms social relations between people into objective, measurable "things". He argues that this process affects every aspect of life, from the economy to the legal system and consciousness itself, fostering a passive, contemplative attitude toward the world. Imputed class consciousness: Lukács distinguishes between the actual, immediate consciousness of the working class and its "imputed" class consciousness. Imputed class consciousness is the understanding of their own class situation and the totality of society that the proletariat would have if it fully grasped its historical position. It is not an automatic or spontaneous process but one that is developed through conscious revolutionary struggle.
